Chapter 32: The Day After
Rift Night came round again on a warm, still evening, with no wind at all.
We went up to the headland anyway.
We didn't go to stand a Watch.
The new champions were doing that, a pair of third years with an otter, very solemn about it.
We went to the bench by the lantern post.
Kerensa brought a basket. Her mother brought a second basket, because she didn't trust Kerensa's.
The girl from the stove came with her heron.
The old fisherman came with his dog, who was gray in the muzzle now and had to be lifted over the stile.
Our mother came last, with a cake she'd baked herself. It had sunk in the middle.
"It's lovely," I said.
"It's terrible," she said. "But I made it."
She sat at the end of the blanket, by the path, where the wind would have come in if there'd been any.
Nobody asked her to. She just did.
We ate in the long dusk.
