Chapter 12: Since Monday

"You know," I said.

"I have known since Monday."

The floor tilted.

"Since the boardroom?"

"Since you stood up and said, it was not her division, Mr. Sorrell." His voice was very gentle. "You said Mister like you were handing me a glass. I would know it in a crowd of ten thousand."

I stared at him.

"You looked right through me."

"Yes."

"You said, Noelle what."

"Yes."

"You let me say Hanrahan in front of two hundred people as if you'd never heard it."

"I had to," he said. "Channing's security man was in the second row. Channing watches where I look. If I had looked at you one second longer, he would have known you mattered, and anything I want, he takes or breaks."

I heard myself laugh, high and cracked.

"The search," I said. "The guest list. The footage."

"The cameras on the sixth floor were off that night because I turned them off," he said. "I did not want a record of me with a woman I did not know. I did not want her hurt if Channing ever found a picture."

"But you found out."

"I found out Monday. And I knew I could not say it out loud in front of him."

"So you made me hunt for myself."

"I made you stand next to me," he said. "Every day. In my office, where my guard checks every person who walks in, and nobody follows you, and Channing's man can't touch you without being seen. The search was the reason you were beside me. It was never a search."
