Chapter 17: The Staff Meeting
At nine the next morning, I stood in front of the entire events division in the fortieth-floor boardroom.
There were thirty-eight of them, in rows, with their coffee going cold.
Elliott had signed the notice himself: all hands, attendance required, no phones.
Paulette sat in the front row in a white blazer, with one silver nail tapping her tablet.
Channing's security man stood at the back wall with his hands folded.
Elliott stood beside him, in the dark corner, saying nothing.
That was the deal.
He had told me last night that this room was mine.
"Good morning," I said. "I'm going to show you two things, and then I'm going to sit down."
The big screen lit up behind me.
It was a spreadsheet, a long one, with a gray header.
REDUNDANCIES.
Paulette's tapping stopped.
"On Monday, Mr. Sorrell deleted this list in front of her," I said. "Twelve names."
