Chapter 19: Pancakes

Milly got into the pancake line at seven the next morning, in her dinosaur pajamas.

Myra's kitchen had a griddle that had never been used, and Myra had cleaned it twice.

"I do not cook breakfast," she said, cracking an egg into a bowl with a flourish.

"You made eggs for me last Sunday," I said.

"Eggs are an emergency. Pancakes are a relationship."

Milly giggled from her stool at the counter.

She had slept in Myra's guest room with the triceratops and a night light borrowed from the neighbor.

She was swinging her feet and had said nothing about the party since we got in the car.

"Daddy."

"Yes, bug."

"Am I still yours?"

Myra's whisk stopped.

I set down my coffee.

"What do you mean?"

"Mommy said Uncle Colby is my real daddy. And nobody told me anything."

"I know. I'm sorry nobody did."

"Does that mean you can give me back?"

My chest hurt in a way it had not hurt in the clinic or at my mother's island.

I came around the counter and crouched in front of her stool.

"Look at me."

She looked.

"I'm your dad on the day you were born, and when you can't sleep."

"I'll be your dad when you're forty and mad at me."
