Chapter 24: Behind the Wheel

On Sunday the lot was empty except for my father's truck.

It was a blue 1989 pickup with a bench seat and a cracked dashboard.

It had sat under a tarp behind the service bay for twenty years.

I had pulled the tarp off that morning and replaced the battery.

Myra stood next to it in jeans and a green sweater with a thermos of coffee, looking at the rust on the fender.

"That is a vehicle," she said, "that has seen things."

"It's older than you."

"It's not older than me. I'm thirty-two."

"It's thirty-seven."

"Then it's older than me. Thank you, Gavin."

Milly had a helmet on, for no reason, and the paper horn from the recital stuck out of the back of it.

She was sleeping over at her friend Priya's that night, and she had packed her bag twice already.

"Daddy, can I?"

"Can you what?"

"Drive the truck."

"You're six."

"I'm six and a half."

I looked at Myra.

She shrugged, with her coffee at her lips.

"I think the lot is big enough," she said.

I opened the door.

The seat smelled like dust and old vinyl, and my father's cap was still on the dashboard.

I lifted Milly onto the bench, and she sat up as straight as a tiny pilot.

Her feet did not reach the pedals.

I got in beside her, and Myra climbed in on the other side, so that all three of us were jammed across the seat.
