Chapter 21: Road to the Desert
The shop went silent around me.
Somebody's pizza slice hit the floor.
"She can't," the birthday girl said. "She withdrew it. The judges said."
"The judges said she can't patent it," Waylon said. "Nobody said she can't fly it."
"That's insane."
"That's Annika."
The recovery senior looked up at me.
"Captain? What do we do?"
I put my slice down on the bench.
I thought about the woman in the hallway telling me I'd done this to my sister.
I thought about a twelve-year-old writing GRAN SAYS NO FIRE IN THE HOUSE.
"We fly ours," I said. "And I'm bringing the box."
We left Houston on the second Monday of June at five in the morning.
Two rented white vans, and Gran's truck.
The rocket rode in the first van, in a padded cradle the structures kids had built, with the birthday girl sitting beside it.
The motors rode in Gran's truck bed, strapped down under a tarp.
The box of notebooks rode on the bench seat between Gran and me, belted in.
"You'll want to go sit with your boy eventually," Gran said, around San Antonio.
