Chapter 28: The Hospital in Galveston

I was on my knees beside her before I knew I'd moved.

"Gran. Gran, look at me."

Her eyes opened a little.

"Sugar," she said. "Don't yell. My chest hurts."

I called 911 with one hand and held hers with the other.

Her fingers were cold.

I couldn't get the wrench out of them.

The operator asked if she was breathing, and I said yes, and then I said it again, louder.

Waylon's truck came up the shell road with two coffees on the dash.

He saw the garage door and me in it, and he was out of the truck before it stopped rolling.

He knelt on Gran's other side.

"Hey, Delphy."

"Don't you Delphy me," Gran whispered. "Where's my coffee?"

He almost laughed. It came out broken.

The ambulance took ten agonizing minutes.

I felt every one.

They let me ride in the back.

Waylon followed in the truck with his hazards on, through every red light on Broadway.

The hospital was the big one on the island, near the seawall.

It was the same hospital where Annika and I were born.

I'd never been inside it.
