Chapter 29: Both Her Girls

Gran was propped up on three pillows with a tube in her nose.

Her hair stood straight up on one side.

She looked at me, and then past me, at Annika in the doorway.

"Well," she said, in a voice like gravel. "Look at that. I had to die a little to get you both in one room."

"You didn't die," I said.

"I tried." She lifted one hand off the sheet, slow. "Come here. Both of you. I can't turn my head."

We came.

I took the hand on the left.

Annika stood on the right side of the bed, with her arms wrapped around herself.

Gran held her other hand out and waited, the way she waits for a stuck bolt.

Annika took it.

"You stayed all night," Gran said to her. "The nurse told me."

"I didn't do anything. I just sat."

"Sitting's the whole job, baby."

Annika's chin started to shake.

Her mother's chin.

She pressed her lips together hard, and then she let go of Gran's hand and stepped back from the bed.

"I have to say something," she said. "To both of you. And I need you to let me say all of it, or I won't be able to."
