Chapter 26: Davina Says It
Chandler saw her and smiled, wide and quick.
"Vee. Babe. Go sit down."
She walked past him.
She came to the podium, and I made room for her.
I stayed there, at her elbow, the way I'd said I would.
Her hands were shaking.
Plain knot, no hoops, a dress that could have gone to a funeral.
She leaned to the microphone and said nothing for so long that somebody coughed.
"My name is Davina Lawson," she said. "I was Chandler's assistant for six years. I was his girlfriend for six years. Those are my eggs in that clinic's freezer."
The room didn't breathe.
"I was in Juliet's house the day she got locked out. I opened her door in her robe. I laughed at her in front of his whole office." Her voice cracked and she pushed through it. "I'm not up here because I'm sorry. I'm up here because she wouldn't take these unless I said it myself."
She held her phone to the microphone.
"Davina," Chandler said. "Don't."
She pressed play.
His voice filled the Mill, huge and clear, out of every speaker.
