Chapter 7: His Stake

I didn't show him the photo.

I showed him the line under it.

August read it by my worktable, and his face shut.

"How many wives," I said. "What does that mean?"

"It means he's scared."

"That's not what I asked."

He looked at the alley door, at the brick, at the cooler.

"Not here," he said. "Not with the door open. Come to my place tonight and I'll tell you all of it."

"Your place."

"I'll stay on the other side of the room. You can bring the bat."

At eight I drove to South End.

Annabeth made me share my location.

He let me in himself.

The loft was the whole top floor: brick walls, a long island of pale stone, nothing hung anywhere.

He took me up to the roof.

Uptown glowed across the dark, with a heater and two chairs nobody sat in.

I stood at the railing with my arms crossed.

"All of it," I said.

He stood a careful six feet away.

"Last month my father had me to lunch at his club. Just me. First time in four years." He kept his eyes on the skyline. "He told me Chandler's wife was pregnant, or about to be. He said he didn't want to give the company to Chandler. He said he'd rather it went to me."

"And?"

"And the terms hadn't changed. A Radford baby by his birthday. He said I'm thirty-six, I own fourteen fertility clinics, and I could have a son by December if I'd stop being proud about it."

"What did you say?"

"The same thing I said in the lawyer's office. I'm not breeding for a board seat." He finally looked at me. "Then I paid for lunch and left."

"You didn't tell me."

"I met you eight days ago, Juliet."

"So there are two of you in the race," I said. "And the one who's on my side is the one who could still win it."
