Chapter 8: Kentucky

The deputy got out of the cruiser slowly, with one hand resting on his belt.

He was about fifty and wore a tan jacket with the county seal. A paper cup of coffee sat steaming on his roof.

Dot reached me first.

She took my face in both hands and said my name twice, and then she pulled me into her shoulder.

She smelled like woodsmoke and horse feed. I had not been held in seven months.

"I've got you," she said. "I've got you, Mel."

"Ma'am," the deputy said. "I need you to step over here."

Dot's husband moved between us and the cruiser with his hands loose at his sides.

He was a big, quiet man, and he did not say a word.

"Is your name Melanie Avery?" the deputy asked.

"Yes."

"I got a call from Larkmont forty minutes ago. They say you walked out of a locked ward."

"I did."

"They say you're a danger to yourself."

"Am I?" I asked. "Ask me anything. My address, my birthday, the president, anything you want."

He asked my birthday and the date.

I answered both. I also told him my husband's name, my daughter's name, the name of the baby they said had died, and the hospital where I had given birth.

He wrote it all down on a pad.

Clayton stood beside his truck with his arms folded. The deputy gave him a long look.

"And you're the nurse," he said.

"I was."

"Did you help this woman leave?"
