I lifted the corners and saw a pair of nines, spade and diamond.

It was a good hand and not a great one.

Castiglioni looked at his own for a long moment, which he had not done all night.

"Raise," he said.

He put forward a stack that would have bought the building I grew up in.

I called.

The flop came ace of clubs, nine of clubs, five of hearts.

I had three nines before anyone else had breathed.

I kept my face as flat as the felt.

Castiglioni bet again, harder.

I raised him back, and the walls of the room moved in around the table.

Two hundred people were leaning so far forward that I heard the carpet shift.
