Chapter 20: Handcuffs

The woman with the badge stopped at the edge of the circle.

"Detective, county district attorney's investigations," she said. "Mr. Zielinski called my office on Friday."

I looked at Rafe.

He did not look away.

"I told her I'd give her the room," he said, "after your daughter was out of that chair.

"Not before."

I understood what he had done.

He had held back a police raid for a day.

A raid would have put Junie in a state van before it put her in my arms.

He had let me play at a table with a detective waiting at the door.

"You could have told me," I said.

"You'd have played worse."

"I'd have played exactly the same."

"Then I'm sorry I didn't trust you with the information."

I breathed out.

It had been my decision to make, and he had made it for me.

It was also the reason my daughter was in my arms.

I let it go, because I could only hold one thing at a time.
