Chapter 22: What He Wants

The suite was dark except for the city.

Pearl had put Junie to bed in the room across the hall.

The door was locked from the inside, and a guard stood at the end of the corridor.

She had hugged me at the elevator, hard, and said only, "Go on."

I stood at the window where I had stood on the first morning, in the black dress I had played in.

Behind me, Rafe closed the door and did not turn on a lamp.

"You said there was something you had to tell me," I said.

"There is."

"Then tell me."

He did not come closer.

He stayed by the door, with his tie loosened and his hands at his sides.

"The first tape I ever saw of the Legend was six years ago," he said.

"A man in a grey jacket made a call against a table of four, with no reason that anyone could see.

"Half a second before each call, his hand stilled on the felt, as if he were waiting for permission.

"I watched it forty times.

"I wanted whatever was in that ear."

I turned around.

"I thought I wanted to own it," he said. "A mind like that, working for the house.

"I hired people to find the voice.

"I got nowhere.

"Then I watched the nights he lost, when he sat there without the voice.
