Chapter 24: Home
The first thing I heard on Monday morning was a dog.
It was a low, wet, contented sound, somewhere near the foot of the bed.
I opened my eyes on grey light and a ceiling I knew.
Rafe lay behind me with one heavy arm across my waist, his face in my hair.
He was awake.
I could tell by the way his breathing had stopped being slow.
"There's a dog," I said.
"I know."
"In the bedroom."
"Pearl says it was a delivery.
"Pearl says it was from a shelter in Henderson, and the shelter says it's eleven years old and has never been in trouble."
"Rafe."
"You said Junie likes anyone who feeds the dog," he said, into my neck. "I'd rather be early."
I turned over.
He looked tired, and happy, and thirty-six years old, with a pillow crease down one cheek and the scar pale in the morning.
I kissed him once, long and slow, because nobody was there to see.
