Chapter 23: The Gate
On the last Saturday of November the Yard was gray and cold, and the families came in coats.
They filled the walks in front of Bancroft Hall, mothers in hats and fathers in overcoats, all hunting for their sons and daughters among a thousand identical blue uniforms.
I stood at the main gate in my dress blues with Ellis beside me.
My father and the foreman stood in front of us.
My father had grown thinner since July.
He had also grown quieter, and he looked straight at me when he spoke, which he had never done before.
Every week for four months he had sent a money order to the yard's account with a note that said, "Owe you more."
I had cashed none of them.
I had kept them in a tin.
"Roz is in the car," he said. "She wouldn't stay home. She's nine months along, Thea. The doctor says any day."
"I'll sit with her."
"Her mother is with her."
"Then I'll sit with them both."
The foreman gave me a gruff smile.
