Chapter 16: Protective Review

Caleb was waiting in the front hall of the Kessling house when we got back.

He stood by the stairs in a fresh gray suit with a leather folder under his arm.

A man in a black overcoat stood beside him, the family's lawyer, with a briefcase and a very polite face.

"There you all are," Caleb said, and smiled at Dad. "I called the bank. They said you'd been to see them."

"I have," Dad said.

"Then you'll understand why I moved the funds. It's a restructuring, Dad. I've been trying to explain it for months, and you've been too proud to listen."

"Sixty-one million dollars went to an account I have never heard of."

"It went somewhere safe. Somewhere nobody in this house can lose it."

Mom came out of the sitting room and stood at my shoulder.

She did not look at Caleb.

I saw her take my hand, and I held on.

"Caleb," I said. "You gave me a card with a limit of zero."

"Erin, you're upset." He said it kindly. "I've brought something that might help."

He opened the folder and took out three sheets.

"The board met this morning, by phone. Eleven of fourteen members are worried about your wellbeing."

He held the first sheet out to Dad.

"It's a letter from a doctor at the university health service. Malnourished, sleeping rough, signs of paranoia. Someone has to be responsible for you."

"I have never seen a doctor at that clinic," I said.

"You were seen, Erin. It's in the record."

The lawyer cleared his throat.

"Under the terms of the trust, Miss Kessling's share is held by the trustee, Mr. Caleb Kessling, until she is twenty-five. If the board finds her unfit to manage it, a protective review follows. It freezes everything."
