Chapter 19: The Green Ledger

Erin's POV

Brynn's suite at Hartwell House was full of people in party clothes who didn't know why they'd been invited.

She had called it a thank-you evening.

There were nine of them, her friends from the dorm and the rowing club, with glasses in their hands and phones in their pockets.

Some of them had filmed the slap in the quad.

I saw that as I came in with Dustin, and I felt my shoulders go up.

Brynn crossed the room and took my good hand.

"Stay by me," she said. "Please."

"I'm here."

She wore the silver dress again.

Her hands were cold, and her chin was up.

"Caleb's coming at nine," she whispered. "I told him I'd sign anything about the adoption if he'd come alone."

"And will he?"

"He thinks I'm weak enough to sign."

At nine the door opened, and my brother came in, alone, in his gray suit.

He smiled at the room.

"What a lovely party," he said. "Brynn, darling. You look well."

"I look scared, Caleb. You've been telling me that for years."

His smile held.

"Shall we step into the other room and sign?"

"No." Brynn turned to face her friends. "I want everyone to hear this. You all saw me hit my sister, and you all filmed it."

Nobody laughed.

"I hit her because he told me she had taken my allowance. I believed him because I always did. He told me for two years that if I ever asked Dad for anything, I'd be sent back where I came from."

A girl by the window put her glass down.

"I have the messages," Brynn said.
