Chapter 20: The Board Table

The boardroom of Kessling Holdings had a table of black glass and fourteen chairs.

Thirteen of them were full when we walked in.

Dad sat at the head, with Mom on his left and an empty chair on his right.

Caleb sat halfway down on the far side with the family lawyer beside him and a folder in front of him.

He looked rested.

He nodded to me as I came in.

I carried the green ledger in both arms, against the stitches.

Dustin came behind me with a thin file, and Brynn behind him with the banker from the stone building, who looked as if she had not slept.

"This is a closed session," a board member said. He was a heavy man with a gray mustache. "Edmund, with respect, the girl isn't on the board."

"She will be in a moment," Dad said. "Sit, Erin."

I sat in the empty chair at his right hand.

My knees were shaking under the glass, and I kept my feet flat on the floor.

"Before we start," Caleb said, mildly, "I'd like it recorded that my sister is unwell, and this is not the place for her."

He slid a sheet down the table.

"The clinic's letter. Malnutrition, paranoia. I submitted it to the board yesterday."

The man with the mustache picked it up.

"Call the clinic," I said.

"I beg your pardon?"

"Put them on speaker. Ask if I was ever seen."

Dad pushed the table phone toward the man, and the man, looking uncomfortable, dialed.

A woman answered.

He asked.

She said that there was no patient record for an Erin Kessling at the health service, and that the doctor named on the letter had been in another country on a research leave for four months.

The room stayed silent for a long moment.

"Thank you," the man said, and hung up.

Caleb folded his hands.

"There must have been a clerical confusion."
