Chapter 13: Alive on Paper
I stood in the lobby with my phone buzzing in my hand.
A woman at the information desk looked up, looked down at her screen, and looked up again.
"You're her," she said. "The one from the news."
"I'm someone," I said.
"I'm sorry. Is it true you aren't sick?"
"I'm sick," I said. "It just isn't the kind that kills me."
Her face did something complicated and kind, and I walked out before it could finish.
On the sidewalk I scrolled to a number I had saved on Tuesday.
Adelaide picked up on the first ring.
"I know," she said. "Come outside."
A long gray car sat at the curb with its engine running.
The driver held the back door open, and on the seat, with his head on a folded blanket, lay Pickle.
"He's been here since two," Adelaide said through the phone. "I thought a person should have someone."
"Where's your grandson?"
