Chapter 14: Duluth
"He's been there since eleven," my mother said into the phone. "He rang the bell once and he hasn't touched it since."
"Is he wearing a coat?"
"He's wearing a suit, and he left the coat in his car so I'd know he wasn't planning to stay."
"Mom."
"It's thirty-four degrees. It's sleeting. He's standing on my porch like a lawn ornament."
"Don't let him in," I said. "I'm coming."
"I wasn't going to let him in. I don't let in men who read about my daughter on the internet before they've met me."
The sleet was coming sideways by the time Adelaide's driver turned onto my mother's street in Duluth.
The street was all tidy yellow houses with plastic deer on the lawns.
My mother had told me to come around the back, because two neighbors were filming from their windows.
She was at the kitchen door in her school bus jacket, a small square woman with gray in her braid and a dish towel over one shoulder.
