Chapter 16: The Vote

The Holloway board room had a walnut table long enough to land a plane on.

Twelve people sat around it at ten the next morning, and Leopold was in the chair at the head.

He had put himself there for the special session, a camel jacket on the seat back and his silver comb-over wet and perfect.

Jasper sat at the far foot of the table with his hands flat on the wood, and he wasn't wearing a ring.

Lyle stood against the wall beside a man with a briefcase, in the same suit he had worn to Adelaide's drawing room.

I came through the double doors at seven minutes past ten with a stiff cream envelope and a woman in a gray suit.

Every head turned except Jasper's.

He looked up slowly, and I saw him decide not to speak.

"This is a closed session," Leopold said, in his lovely quiet voice. "Miss Larkin, I'm afraid you aren't a member."

"My shares, my guest," Adelaide said from her chair beside the window.

She tapped the brass duck on the carpet, and nobody argued with a duck.

"Then Miss Larkin is welcome," Leopold said warmly. "In fact, she can listen to Mr. Bascom."
