Chapter 11: Celia's Cup of Tea

Celia reached the boy first, and Teddy would not let go of Brittany's dress.

"Teddy, sweetheart, come to me," Celia said, bending, her hand out.

He pressed his face into Brittany's knees and shook his head.

The whole room was watching.

Brittany put one hand on his hair. It was damp and hot, and she could feel him breathing in great gulps.

"He's frightened," she said. "He should go to bed."

"Of course," Celia said, with a smile that cost her something. "Thank you. You're so good with him."

The nanny carried him out over her shoulder.

He kept his eyes on Brittany until the door closed.

Celia asked for tea the next afternoon, and she asked politely.

She sent the message to the Kincaid gate on thick cream paper, in her round advisor's hand.

Twenty minutes, her note said. Only us. For Teddy's sake.

Brittany went, because she wanted to see which face Celia would bring.

The place was a tea room two streets from Goldmont University, with cracked green tiles and a bell on the door.

Celia had picked it on purpose.

It was where she used to take students who cried in her office.

Elliot's assistant took a table at the back and ordered a coffee he did not drink.

"Brittany." Celia stood and took both her hands. "I'm so glad you came. Sit, sit. I ordered the jasmine."

She poured. Her hands did not shake.

"I want to say first that Teddy has not stopped talking about you."
