Chapter 14: Said Aloud

"Yes," he had said, and the word stayed in the study.

Brittany put both hands flat on the desk.

"You let the broadcast run live. You knew Dalton would be watching, and you knew he'd come to your gate."

"I did."

"You stood there in the road and let me think I was being rescued."

"You were never in danger at that gate."

"I was bait." Her voice shook. "I walked out on that stage and you put your hand on my back, and all the while I was bait."

He did not defend it.

"Say it all," Elliot said. "You'll feel better."

"I don't want to feel better. I want you to tell me you see it."

"I see it."

She nodded once. It was not enough, and it was more than Dalton had ever given her.

Then he stood off the desk, and his own voice came out hard.

"Now I'll say mine."

"Go ahead."

"You lived in his house for six years. You ate off his table. You put your savings into the first office, and you never once asked where the first code came from."

She stared at him.

"I was twenty-two. I loved him."

"You're the cleverest person I've met. You make lists for the lists. You never asked."

"He told me he wrote it himself!"

"And you believed a man who needed you to." His eyes were bright and furious. "My sister cried in a dormitory for a year while you picked tile for his hall."

It hit hard, because it was true.

Brittany said nothing for a breath, and then she stepped around the desk and stood so close that she had to tilt her head back.

"You're right," she said. "I didn't ask. I'll spend the rest of my life being sorry about that, and I'll start by taking it all back for her."

His breathing changed.

"And I'm also standing in your study," she said, "and you said public kisses only. Say it again, Mr. Kincaid."
