Chapter 12: Two Wives

Reece opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

His lawyer put a hand on his arm and said, "We'd like a recess."

"Take all the recess you want," my lawyer said, capping her pen. "We're done for today."

I walked out.

I made it to the elevator before my knees started shaking.

My lawyer stood next to me and watched the floor numbers go down.

"How long have you had that?" she said.

"Since the day my daughter came home."

"And you didn't tell me."

"I'm telling you now."

She laughed, one short bark.

"Remind me never to play cards with a dispatcher."

Two days later, I took Kinley to her NICU follow-up clinic on the hospital's second floor.

She weighed nine pounds one ounce.

The doctor said she was perfect and a little loud.

I was pushing her stroller back through the main lobby at eleven in the morning.

The elevator doors opened, and Reece came out in scrubs.

He didn't see me.

He was looking across the lobby at the foundation's donor wall.

Kaitlyn was standing in front of it in a white blazer with three women from her office.

She was holding a tablet and pointing at a blank spot on the wall.

"Kait."

He said it loud enough to stop people.

She turned around with her bright pink smile.

"Bro! I was just going to text you. We're putting your name up here in May."

He walked straight across the lobby.

He had the county copy of the license in his hand.

"Did you file this?"

The three women from her office stopped talking.

A volunteer at the information desk lowered her phone.

Two residents on their way to the cafeteria slowed down and didn't speed back up.

Kaitlyn glanced at the paper.

Then at the people watching.
