Chapter 31: One Year
Thursday afternoon, the sky over Bloomfield went the color of a nickel.
I packed my bag for a double shift.
Ruthann was on the couch with her feet up, because she'd be on the couch all night.
Morgan was on the rug with Kinley, because he was always on the rug with Kinley.
He was due at the yard at six.
"Go say bye to your mother," he told her.
He set her on her feet by the coffee table.
She held on with one fist and looked across the rug at me by the door.
It was maybe five feet.
She looked at the gap.
Then she let go of the table.
One step, wobbly, arms up like she was holding an invisible tray.
Two.
Three.
Ruthann sat straight up on the couch and grabbed her phone.
Four steps.
Five.
Kinley walked into my knees and grabbed two handfuls of my jeans and yelled, "Four!"
I dropped my bag.
I picked her up and swung her around, and she screamed with joy.
Morgan was laughing on the floor, flat on his back with both hands over his face.
"Did you get it?" I said. "Ruthann, did you get it?"
