The whole dispatch room was looking at me.
The day guy, still in his coat.
The second desk, with his half a mustache.
The manager, in his office doorway.
On my screen, every crew in the county sat on channel four, waiting.
I keyed the mic.
"Nine, Four," I said. "Affirmative."
For one second there was nothing.
Then somebody leaned on a horn.
Then all of them did.
Every truck in the county, parked on the ice at the end of the worst night of the year, honking into its radio.
Crew Six keyed in over the noise.
"Six copies. Four, you can do better."
"Negative, Six," I said. "I can't."
On Friday morning, Morgan and I went down to the courthouse on Grant Street for a license.
The clerk slid the form across the counter.
I looked at the date stamp.
January ninth.
The same day of the year Reece had walked in here and checked a box.
I read every line before I signed.
Number of previous marriages: one.
Currently married: no.
I checked them and raised my right hand and meant it.
Morgan filled out his form in seconds.
