Chapter 17: Ty Ingram

Practice ended early, because nobody could skate.

The team sat in the locker room in wet pads with the heater roaring and no one taking anything off.

Coach stood at the door. Beside him stood the athletic director, who had come back alone and looked worse.

"I'm going to say this once," the athletic director said. "Mr. Ingram's gift ends at the close of this season."

Nobody answered him.

"The gift is not renewed in April. The name comes down, and the scholarship fund goes with it."

A freshman at the end of the bench asked, "What does that mean for the guys on it?"

"It means we'll look for other money."

"Where?" the freshman asked.

"I don't know yet."

Cullen Pratt was sitting very still with his helmet in his lap.

He was not talking, and in all the time Ty had known him that had never happened.

Ty stood up.

The room turned toward him.

He felt it all at once, forty eyes and the smell of wet gear, and his heart was going hard against his ribs.

"I need to say something," he said. "Coach, can I?"

Coach looked at him for a long second.

"Go ahead, Ingram."

"My father didn't pull it because of anything you did," Ty said. "He pulled it because of me. He wanted me to quit hockey and go to work for him."

Nobody moved.

"He's offering me a job at the company. After graduation. A real office, a title, all of it." Ty swallowed. "That's what the gift was for. He wanted me to say yes."
