Chapter 17: The Stamp
I did not dial Ida that night.
I left his phone on the desk and took the ledger upstairs.
I sat up with it and Frank's two pages until the windows went grey.
By seven I had found what I wanted on page forty-one.
Rowan's copy of Frank's books listed every Lakeshore payment out of the Terminal, with the date, the sum and the stamp that had approved it.
Eleven of them carried a red oval impression in the corner.
L. LONERGAN, VP FINANCE.
I photographed the page, and tore a clean copy of it out of the photocopy, and put it in the pocket of my cardigan.
On the landing outside the east wing there was a tray.
Eggs, burned black, and a folded note in an upright hand.
"A gesture," it said. "Not an apology. R."
I carried the tray to the kitchen and ate the eggs standing up.
I hadn't eaten since a bun at Area Central, and they were terrible.
