Chapter 4: The Bedroom Review
"No hurry," Lionel said. "Lorna and I will finish our coffee. Take all the time you need."
He smiled when he said it.
Rowan took my elbow and walked me up the main stairs at a perfectly normal pace.
At the first landing, out of sight, he said very quietly, "Four minutes."
"Three and a half. He'll start up the stairs after his second cup."
"How do you know that?"
"He took his time with the first."
We ran.
My room was in the east wing, down a corridor I had never once seen him use. His was in the west, behind double doors.
I went through mine like a burglar, armfuls of oatmeal wool, a hairbrush, my glasses case, a paperback I'd been pretending to read since September.
Rowan came in behind me and stood very still in the doorway of my bedroom, a six-foot-four man in a three-piece suit.
"What do I carry?"
"Cardigans."
He took a stack. It came up to his chin.
"There are a great many of these," he said, muffled.
"Eleven."
"They're all the same."
"That's the point of them."
"I thought it was a tragic pattern of purchases."
"Walk, Mr. Garvey."
He walked.
His bedroom was bigger than my whole apartment in Bridgeport. A bed. A wall of books. A legal pad on one nightstand and three pens lined up beside it.
The other nightstand was bare.
I dumped the books there, and my glasses, and set a glass of water down with a coaster.
"Which side do you sleep on?" I said.
"Right."
"Then I'm left."
"You'll need to look like you've been left a while," he said, and began hanging cardigans in his closet with enormous care, one by one, the way you'd lay out dead birds.
I pulled the sheets down on one side and creased them with my hand.
