Luoyi stood on the porch in yesterday's robe with her hair flat on one side, and did the only thing she could think of.

"It is a poem," she said. "My husband writes them."
The Inspector held the damp scrap up to the light and read it aloud, with feeling.
"Treaty. One. No one is hurt. Two. No lying to each other." She lowered it, misty-eyed. "It doesn't rhyme."

His sleeve was half on, his collar was buttoned wrong, and he looked like a man dragged through a hedge by joy.
"What happened to the rest?" said the Inspector.

The Inspector wrote in her notebook, and Luoyi read it upside down: Newlyweds exchange vows in writing, nightly, with goat.
Then she folded the poem into her own sleeve, which Luoyi hated.
She handed them each a river-snail dumpling from her basket, which Luoyi could not hate at all.
"I came for the soup pot," said the Inspector, chewing. "And for news."
