My father opened his mouth, and I held up one hand.
"Not here, Papa. Not with Dario's footsteps still in the room."
The doors had boomed shut a full minute ago, and the candles were still shivering.
"Bee, we did it to keep you safe."
"You did it to catch a man, and I was the net."
Orazio leaned on his cane.
"Sweetheart, you are a clever girl. You see how the plan needed you."
"I see that it needed me ignorant."
I took a breath, and my voice came out level.
"Here is what happens now, both of you."
"I signed one contract in Oak Park, with three terms, and I read every word first."
"I sign nothing more. No new page, no new promise, no vow, until I decide the price has been paid."
"Bianca," my father said.
"You don't get to be sorry tonight, Papa. Sorry is cheap, and you can afford it."
