Chapter 14: Nicola Talks
Nicola sat on the third step of the stoop with his leather jacket pulled around him.
His split lip had healed to a thin pink line.
His eyes were red, and he had not shaved.
I sat down next to him without asking.
"Nonna said you were crying."
"Nonna exaggerates."
"She doesn't, Nico."
He laughed, and then it turned into something else, and he wiped his face with his sleeve.
"I took his money, Bee."
"I know you owed him."
"Not that. After. After you paid the marker."
I kept my face still.
"How much?"
"Twenty thousand, in four envelopes. For carrying things."
"What things?"
"Messages. Word of mouth, never written. Where the Roselli men were sleeping, which flight Papa took."
My stomach turned over slowly.
"You told Silvio which flight Papa took."
"I thought it was gossip. I thought it was a favor between friends."
