By three in the morning, the house was quiet again.
The eight men were in a Castellane warehouse with my father's twelve watching them.
A doctor Nonna trusted had stitched Dario's shoulder at the kitchen table and left with a plate of cookies.
I lay on top of my bed in the room across the hall, still in my clothes, and stared at the ceiling.
My hands would not stop shaking.
I had pulled a fuse and given my father an order and watched a man's blood soak through a dish towel.
I was eighteen, and I could not make my fingers lie flat.
The lock on my side of the door was turned.
I got up, turned it back, and crossed the hall.
His door was open a hand's width.
Dario sat against the headboard with a lamp on and his bandaged shoulder bare against the pillow.
