They stood.
My father first, with his reading glasses swinging on their cord.
Orazio rose a moment later, one hand on the pew, the other leaving his cane where it lay.
Four hundred people watched them.
I had not planned to do it in front of the church.
But the church was full, and I had spent these weeks learning what gets done in a room and what only gets promised.
"You asked what I wanted," I said to my father. "On hotel paper. I'm answering here."
"Bee."
"Three things, Papa. First, the one hundred eighty thousand dollars comes back into my mother's trust, from your own account, by Monday."
He nodded at once.
"Second, my name goes on Roselli Provisions as co-owner, not as the girl who keeps the books."
"Done."
"Third, Nicola."
My brother stood very straight by the side door.
"He owes me what I paid."
