Chapter 8: I'm Asking

"Stay on the line," I told Cinzia, and ran for the garage in my bare feet.

"There's a man at the door," she said. "He's knocking. He says he's from the bakery."

"Is there a lock?"

"A chain."

"Then don't open it. Push the dresser against the door and keep talking to me."

Her breath came fast and thin through the phone.

Behind me the house was still asleep.

Adriano's driver sat in the kitchen with a cup of coffee, and he stood up when he saw my face.

"Where is he?" I said.

"Mrs. Corsini, he told me not to say."

"Where is my husband?"

He hesitated.

"A clinic in Pittsburgh," he said. "He had a car at four, and told me to stay with you."

"Give me your keys."

"I can't."

"Then drive me," I said. "And call him on the way."

We were on the highway ten minutes later.

The driver tried Adriano's phone four times and got voicemail.

I tried it myself, and Cinzia whispered through the other phone in my lap.

"He's still outside."

"Is he alone?"

"I think he's waiting for someone."

I closed my eyes.

I thought of the one thing I had never done, in seven weeks, with my father or my husband.

I had never asked.
