Chapter 21: Sisters
I didn't let go of her wrist right away.
"Did Domenic know?" I said. "That you knew?"
"He knew everything about me the first week," my mother said. "He married me anyway. I never understood that."
I did.
He'd needed a wife in that house who could be watched.
I didn't say it.
The doctors let her go on Thursday morning with a bottle of real pain pills and a sheet about rib exercises.
She couldn't go back to Gladwyne.
She couldn't go back to the rowhouse either, because Corrine had a key.
So we took her to the gym.
Angelo carried her overnight bag up the narrow stairs and put it on his own bed.
"Where will you two sleep?" my mother asked, looking around the long room at his books on the floor.
"On the mats downstairs," Angelo said.
"Both of you?"
"Mom."
"I'm only asking." She lowered herself onto the gray wool blanket with a wince. "I'm allowed to ask. I'm the mother."
Angelo went down the stairs very fast.
At noon I told him I was going to see Corrine.
