Chapter 26: Seven Fishes
Angelo didn't say anything for a long time.
Then he turned my hand over under the blanket and laid his thumb on my pulse.
"Then I'll be right beside you when you do it," he said. "And it won't come to that."
On Christmas Eve I wore the beige dress.
Let Paulie think he'd won.
The Gladwyne house was lit gold from every window, with a wreath on the door.
The dining room table was the one from the engagement dinner.
Long enough to land a plane on.
It was covered end to end in fish.
Baccala, fried smelts, calamari, clams in white wine, shrimp piled on ice.
The four captains sat along both sides with their wives in velvet.
Paulie sat at the head, in Domenic's chair.
Corrine sat at his right hand in red silk, with the gold C on one wrist and his watch on the other.
The lawyer sat at the far end with his leather bag at his feet.
I sat at the far end too, in beige, next to Angelo.
The housekeeper set a plate of smelts in front of me and didn't look at me once.
