Chapter 24: Bound
Tobren knelt in the courtyard at Greywater with his head bare and his hands open on his knees.
The Houses had sentenced him at dawn.
A year in the king's guard, under Brack.
"You'll have no sword until the captain says," said Rorik. "You'll do what you're told."
"Yes, Majesty."
"You'll clean the stables for the first month."
"Yes, Majesty."
"If you cry in front of the horses, I shall hear about it."
My brother laughed, a wet, surprised sound, and wiped his eyes with his wrist.
Brack held out a wooden practice stick.
"Stand up, lad," he said. "You'll feel stupid later."
"I already do."
"Good. That's the start of it."
Embla leaned on the courtyard wall beside me in a new black coat, with a chain of office around her neck.
The Houses had made her Chancellor the same morning they struck out the old one.
She disliked it intensely.
"Look at him," she said, pointing her chin at Brack. "He's holding it wrong."
"Holding what?"
"The stick.
"He always holds it wrong, and then he tells the boys it's a technique."
"You could tell him."
"I have.
"Every day for nine years.
"He says I couldn't hit a barn with a spear."
