Chapter 31: Past the Mile
"Not a hospital," Mickey said. "Home. The shop."
"It's forty minutes," Vin said.
"Then drive fast. You've done it before."
Aoife already had the midwife on the phone.
Nonna pulled the white tablecloth off the table, roast and all, and wrapped it around Mickey's waist.
"It's ruined anyway," she said. "Go."
The driver took the Eisenhower at ninety with his hazards on.
Mickey sat in the back between Vin and Nonna, gripping both their hands.
Nonna prayed out loud in Italian the whole way.
Every few minutes she stopped to tell the driver he drove like her husband, which was not a compliment.
The pains came in waves, low and tight.
"Breathe," Aoife said from the front seat, reading off her phone.
"I am breathing."
"Breathe better."
The midwife was waiting on the sidewalk outside the shop with her bag, in the dark, under the gold letters.
CORCORAN & SON.
"Well," she said, looking at Mickey in his tablecloth. "Let's make it true."
