"I can't choose with my hands tied," I said.

My voice came out steadier than I felt.

Silvio's eyes went bright.

"Cut her loose," he said to the man behind me. "I want her pointing. I want everybody to see."

A knife slid under the plastic at my wrists and the tie snapped.

I brought my arms around and rubbed them, slowly, as if they hurt.

They did.

Marisa watched me, perfectly still.

Rafe knelt with the muzzle against his skull and looked at no one but me.

"Take your time," Silvio said. "Two minutes. Then I pick."

"You'll shoot him either way."

"Probably. But one of you gets to decide it, and I do love when it's a woman."

I looked at Rafe.

I looked at my aunt.

I lifted my hand and pointed, slowly, at the floor halfway between them.

"That's not a choice."
