Chapter 17: The Don
My father walked into the warehouse the way he walked into every room.
He did not hurry.
The cane struck the concrete once with each step, and forty men spread out behind him along the racks.
They had guns in their hands, and they kept them low.
Behind them, in a camel coat, came old Brandolini.
His face was the color of candle wax.
My father looked at the floor.
He looked at the blood, at the broken zip ties and the man holding his thigh, at Silvio curled on the concrete under Rafe's boot.
Last, he looked at his sister, still tied to her side of the overturned chair.
"Cut her loose," he said.
Two of his men ran.
Marisa shook her wrists out and smoothed her hair with a hand that hardly trembled.
"You're late, Carmine," she said.
"I was at the Brandolinis' table."
"I know where you were. I was here."
"Livia sent me a message." He turned his head. "She said, come, or don't."
