Chapter 18: The Suspension
Hartwell's enforcer started on Rhett during the first faceoff.
He was a thick-necked senior in a red jersey, and he skated beside Rhett the whole shift talking low.
"Heard you quit on the C," he said, loud enough for me to hear from the bench. "Heard it's because your mama needs the money."
Rhett kept his eyes on the puck.
"What does she do, Tremblay? Wipe old men?"
I saw Rhett's taped hand close and open.
He skated away.
He did it again in the second period, when the enforcer hooked his stick.
He did it a third time when a shoulder caught his ribs after the whistle.
Coach stood at the end of the bench with his arms folded and his jaw working.
"Look at that," he said. "Not one glove off."
His voice shook.
The score sat tied at two as the third period began.
I wrote every shot into my notebook and kept my eyes off the left side of the bench, where Jase sat with his head down.
He hadn't spoken to anyone since the meeting.
With six minutes left, Hartwell's enforcer finally went after somebody else.
