Chapter 19: What Ridley Said

I decided to tell nobody until I was sure.

That lasted until dawn, when my mother walked into Mabel's spare room carrying a thermos of coffee and stopped in the doorway.

She sniffed once.

"Baby," she said. "You smell different."

"I'm covered in creek mud."

"Under the mud."

I looked at Kellan, asleep on his side with the sheet at his waist and the pink stripe fading on his ribs.

I looked at my mother.

"I'm two days late."

She set down the thermos.

She crossed the room, took my face in her flour-dry hands, and kissed me hard on the forehead.

"The vet opens at eight," she said. "You're coming with me. We're not telling a soul, and especially not that man, until we know."

"Mom."

"A woman gets to know first. That's the law, and if it isn't, I'll make it one."

We were in her truck by seven.

The vet took a vial of blood from my arm, patted my hand, and said she'd call the diner by Wednesday noon.

I spent two days believing I had managed it.

On Wednesday I walked into the diner at lunch, past the plywood where the windows had been, and found it half empty.
