Chapter 20: Tailgate
I found him that evening at the mill, sitting on the open tailgate of his truck with a thermos and a bandage under his shirt.
The saws had stopped for the day.
Sawdust hung in the last light, and the whole yard smelled of cut pine.
He looked up before I reached him.
He felt me coming across the bond.
"You're scared," he said.
"A little."
"Of me?"
"Of your face."
He put the thermos down and patted the tailgate beside him.
I climbed up and sat with my feet dangling and my hands knotted in my lap.
"Everly. Tell me."
"I was two days late. I told my mother. We went to the vet on Tuesday, and she called today."
He stopped breathing.
I felt it, in my own chest, the way his lungs just quit.
"I'm pregnant," I said. "Kellan, we're having a baby."
He didn't say anything for a long time.
A woodpecker knocked in the trees behind the yard.
