Chapter 16: Slap
Linnet called her mother's phone from the back of Madam's car, and Anselm answered.
"Linnet," he said warmly. "How lovely. Your mother is at my club, and we're having tea."
"Put her on."
"She's resting. Why don't you come and see her? Bring your mother-in-law. I'd like her to see how well Mrs. Orsey is looked after."
He hung up.
The Dray club stood on a quiet square, with brass lamps at the door and a doorman in grey.
Madam Ravenscroft went up the steps with her rosary wound around her fist and her chin high.
The doorman opened the door before she reached it.
Inside, forty members sat at small tables under a painted ceiling, with cups in their hands.
Edith Orsey sat in the middle of them in a velvet chair.
She was in her work coat, and her hands were knotted in her lap.
Anselm stood beside her with a hand on the chair back.
"Here they are," he said. "Everyone, you'll remember the widow. And this is Madam Ravenscroft, whom I'm sure you've all missed."
Nobody laughed.
Linnet walked straight to her mother.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm fine," Edith said, in the voice she used on the mill floor. "They said you were ill. Then they put a pen in my hand."
"Mrs. Orsey is a little confused," Anselm said gently. "She signed the transfer of the mill to my father's bank this morning, and now she's forgotten. It happens to people under strain."
"I signed nothing," Edith said.
"I have it here."
He held up the same forged letter from the gala, with a fresh signature added at the bottom in fresh ink.
