Chapter 13: The Statement
Jonas looked at the pen.
He did not take it.
"Read it," Colby said. "It's short. Whitney typed it."
Whitney stood with her sunglasses on and said nothing.
Jonas took the page and read it standing in the sun.
It said that Sergeant Sadie Pickens had invented a rescue to ruin a decorated soldier after a personal breakup.
It said that Captain Swafford, having reviewed the facts, withdrew all support for her claim.
There was a line for his signature and a line for the date.
"It has an error," Jonas said.
Colby smiled.
"Which one?"
"It says I reviewed the facts."
He folded the page in half, then in quarters, and tore it down the middle.
He held out the pieces to Colby.
Colby did not take them.
"You understand what's in the other envelope," he said, soft and pleasant. "A captain who coerced a subordinate in his own truck. Whitney will swear to what she saw."
"Whitney can swear to what she saw," I said. "She saw me climb into his lap."
