Chapter 16: The Crew Chief
The house on Murchison Road was a low brick ranch with a tow truck in the yard and a faded wreath still on the door.
Jonas's gray truck was already at the curb.
He got out when he saw my Honda, in jeans and a gray T-shirt, and for the first time since the lot he looked like a man with nothing to hold.
"You didn't go in," I said.
"You had the address. I thought you should be the one to knock."
I knocked.
The man who opened the door was in his late fifties, broad as a doorframe, with a gray beard and grease under his nails.
He looked at Jonas, and nothing in his face moved.
Then he looked at me.
"Doc," he said.
It came out like a breath he had been holding for seven years.
"Hello, Chief."
"You've still got that eyebrow." His voice went rough. "I told the pilot we should've turned around for you, and he said you'd kill us if we did."
"I might have."
He stood back from the door.
"Come in. I don't have anything to offer except coffee that's bad on purpose."
