Chapter 21: Eyes On
The tape hissed into silence, and fourteen hundred people sat inside it.
Nobody coughed.
On the stage the Colonel stood at the podium with both hands flat on the wood.
"General," he said, "that recording has been edited by a man I discharged for drinking."
"I read the sign-out log this morning, Colonel," said the general. "Your signature, three days after the fire."
"Is the log edited?"
"Sir, I built this Group."
"You built a lie and were promoted for it."
The general rose from his chair, and the whole auditorium felt it.
He walked to the podium and the Colonel moved aside from it without being asked.
"Eyes on me," the general said into the microphone.
Fourteen hundred heads came up.
"Colonel, you are relieved of command, effective this minute. The sergeant major will take your credentials and your sidearm."
The Group's sergeant major, a wide silent man at the end of the first row, stood and walked up the steps.
He held out his hand.
The Colonel looked at it for a long time.
Then he unclipped the holster and put it in the sergeant major's palm, and took the silver eagle off his collar, and set it there too.
