Chapter 15: Kieran
"Kieran," I said. "Put that down."
"I can't."
He was soaked to the skin, and his teeth were chattering, and he had Orla's husband's old revolver in his fist.
"I took it from her hall drawer. Her old driver brought me here when I begged. He's waiting downstairs."
"What are you doing here?"
"I heard Orla on the phone. She said Declan had you."
His voice cracked.
"I was going to walk into the Pour House and tell him to take me instead."
"I'm right here, Kieran."
"I know that now."
He looked past me at Ronan, standing half dressed in the hall with his hands loose.
"Then I'm giving myself up to him," Kieran said.
He swung the barrel toward Ronan, then toward his own chest, and then he could not decide.
"You're Ronan's to punish. I sent you to die."
"Kieran."
"Just do it. Or I will. Please."
I crossed the landing in three steps and slapped him across the face.
